Which of you are up to it?

The Chi-town Superwoman Jackie took this challenge!
The South-Beach Shaman Cyrus took this challenge!

If you are like me, sometimes it is tough to come up with something to post about. That is where the Hofzinser Blogger Challenge came from.

This HBC is a doozy.

Think of an issue you believe in strongly. An issue that means a lot to you which also has many opponents.

Step back and think about how the other side thinks. What are the VALID arguments against your side of the issue. If you can't think of any you are clouding the issue. Really sit on their side and figure out how they can think your take on the issue is as wrong as you see theirs.

Create a post that argues for the other side. Don't be coy, don't be silly and don't be snarky. Take the challenge and really present an argument against your side in the issue.

You cannot hope to overcome opposers to your beliefs if you don't understand them, see there side as clearly as they do and respect their perspective.

I am in the midst of writing a post showing the benefits and advantages of a socialized central government as a solution to the ills of a free market. It is a toughie but I am getting through it.

Look at your issue. Do you understand it enough to make their argument? Could you convince someone of their side in the issue?

Can you argue the opposing side of your views on issues like:

Gay rights
Reproductive rights/abortion
the war in Iraq
George Bush's presidency
Clinton's presidency
The role of religion in government or society
Affirmative action
American foreign policies
Federal funding of stem cell research
The death penalty
Tobacco litigation
A national health care plan
Capitalism vs. Socialism
Gun control

Can you?

If you do take the challenge, please link to this in your post. Be sure to leave a comment so I may feature your post here.

This is a real challenge, folks. I am dying to see which of you are up to it.

OK, I'll bite. I'll write one about how GWB has been doing a bad job.

Wow...this is a hard one. You specified that it should be an issue we're passionate about and I'll piss myself off trying to argue the other side of an issue I'm emotionally invested in. I'm not sure I can do it. I'll want to combat every point I make in favor of the opposing view. It will be like those voices in my head. "No it won't!" "Yes it will!" EGADS!!

I'll get back to you on this. I'd like to try it, but I'm not sure I'm capable!

Like no snarkiness at all?

Actually, Hof, I make my kids do this at school when we do the Argument Essay. By the time we reach that part of the Eng 101 class, I know their personalities. I do things like divide them up into two groups and make them argue the opposite of what I KNOW they believe. Usually at first they are pissed until they hear my reasoning for it. I believe firmly that if you can argue the other side, you have then researched all your options enough to make an informed decision. Sometimes after arguing the other side, I flipped viewpoints. Sometimes arguing the other side made my original beliefs stronger (because I knew the opposing arguments then and how to counteract them).

I actually learned to do that when I was in high school. I did Lincoln/Douglas debate for several years, and we were required to argue both pro and con on a given topic every single day we went to an event.

I might take up this challenge later. It would take a LOT of work, and Alex is here. I think you understand!

I'm not sure that I'm capable of defending the enemy. I'll think about it.

I'm with Mel. I thought about this challenge on my drive home tonight and I have a counter argument for any argument my opposition (being played by myself for the purposes of this challenge) can come up with!

Besides, Kira just tagged me, so I had something to post! YAY!

Okay Hof, I gave it a try. I can't really spend a LOT of time on this but think the participation was good and I even did a little research.

I'm both ways on the death penalty so I really had to think it through.

You've got two links to your site on my post. Happy judging.

Wow. This is hard. I'd really like to do it but it's going to take a lot of thought.

As challenges go I think this one is very good!

Hey Hof, I thought this was a great idea! Kudos for thinking of it. You and BR (who I always think of as the Original Blogger Challenge Facilitator - impressive title huh) should team up and spread this idea around!

If I can't be snarky, why bother, ya know? :-)

Good lord I would love to take this challenge, but I don't think I have the appropriate amount of time needed to do it. Damn. If I ever get it done, I'll let you know.
