Nothing new to their craft

You would think the first cut from 48 to 30 would be easy. It was far from easy. There are some great artists already on the cut list.

The following artists are cut:

1) Air (Moon Safari -1998)-cyrus
2) Better Than Ezra (Deluxe-1995)-vegasgustan
3) Coldplay (Brothers and Sisters-1999)-cherry moon
4) Daft Punk (Homework -1997)-cyrus
5) Dubtribe Sound System (Bryant Street -1999)-cyrus
6) Jack Johnson (Brushfire Fairytales-2001)-vegasgustan
7) Jet (Get Born 2003)-hof
8) Jay Z (reasonable doubt-1996)-mo
9) Jimmy Eat World (Static Prevails-1996)-vegasgustan

14) Queens of the Stone Age (self titled 1998)-melina
15) The Black Crowes (Shake Your Money Maker-1990)-allison
16) The Killers (Hot Fuss 2004)-melina
17) The Verve (A Storm in Heaven - 1993)
18) Weezer (Weezer 'Blue Album'-1994)-vegasgustan

Why did these 18 get cut? Because I said so....

Many of Cyrus' nominees got cut only because I am not familiar with them. I know Cyrus personally and have no doubt these artists are worthy of inclusion... Cyrus aint no dummy. I have to cut and the ones I am not familiar.

Many got cut because they bring nothing new to their craft. Some of these artists are wonderful but are standing tall on the shoulders of giants... they are not innovative enough to survive this first cut.

Jay Z and Kanye were tough... but if I have to choose between Snoop, Kanye, Jay and Tribe Called Quest... Jay and Kanye lose. They are not as innovative as the other two.

So who survived?

1) Alanis Morrisette (jagged little pill-1995)-mo
2) Alice in Chains (Facelift-1990)-hof
3) Alicia Keys (Songs In A Minor -2001)-cyrus
4) Ani Difranco (Ani Difranco 1994)-hof
5) Beck - (Mellow Gold-1994)-hof
6) Ben Folds/Ben Folds Five (Self Titled-1995)-vegasgustan
7) Dave Mathews (Under the table and dreaming 1994)-hof
8) Dido (No Angel-1999)-dan
9) Eminem - (Infinite-1996)-hof
10) Fiona Apple (Tidal-1996)-dan
11) Foo Fighters (Self Titled-1995)-hof
12) Fugees (Blunted on reality-1994)-hof
13) Green Day (kerplunk-1992)-mo
14) Jeff Buckley (Grace-1994)-dan
15) Mary J Blige (My Life - 1994)-dana
16) Modest Mouse (This Is a Long Drive... 1996)-hof

While I commend your cutting, and agree in the most part, it is unreal that Pantera has not been included on the list. This is a band that totally redefined metal and bands into the next century will draw from them as an influence. Highly disappointing.

If I may be of some assistance...here are my recommendations for the top 20 in no particular order...

Alice in Chains
Ani DiFranco
Dave Matthews Band
Wu Tang Clan (Not previously listed)
Pantera (Not previously listed)
Green Day
Nirvana
Pavement
Radiohead
Snoop Dog
Tori Amos
Tribe Called Quest
Pearl Jam
Beck
Fugees
Mary J Blige
Tool
Smashing Pumpkins
The White Stripes
Modest Mouse

Only my opinion of course, but if we are going on influence and longevity, these should be it. But, as always I trust your musical opinion. Despite not including Wu Tang and Pantera.

Love you twice

I agree with the cuts, even mine. I certainly agree that BTE should be cut. However, Jack Johnson and Jimmy Eat World....c'mon...jeez.

i have to respectfully disagree, hof. first, jayz doesnt write any of his verses, they are basically freestyled. freestyling something thats even coherent is an accomplishment. freestyling and having it compared to the greats is just down right unreal.

second, i dont see how you can have alice and nirvana on the same list. i do understand the differences between their sounds, but under your standard of innovation, id say alice has to go.
